Tall vase, decorated with traditional "Coda di Pavone" (Peackock tail) design.
Penna pavone
It's one of the most beautiful and important decorations of the Renaissance.
According to the Italian tradition, this motif may refer to Cassandra Pavoni (pavone means peacock), the lover of Galeotto Manfredi, lord of Faenza in the late fifteenth century, but this is probably just a legend.
This is in fact an ancient symbol, already present in byzantine and persian ceramics.
It is related to the myth of Phoenix, the beatiful bird that every 500 years burns its nest and itself and arises to new life. It symbolizes long life and immortality.
